Doesn't plastering this in the media defeat the point?


KTVU here in the Bay Area has been running with this 'Top Story' all morning, both on TV and online:

Baby Abandoned At SJ Fire Station

This isn't a 'top story'. It isn't even a story.

But what it does is defeat the whole point of the law that allows women to leave newborn children at any hospital or fire station in the state. When women who might end up having to take advantage of such a law see the media attention paid to it, they aren't going to do it. Instead, they are a lot more likely to do what the law hoped to stop: more dangerous abandonment of newborns.
