'We're family here!'............

I hate hearing that from anyone when they're talking about a workplace or employer. It's such complete bullshit.

I've worked for some real gems and some real shit employers. But they all have one thing in common: they are all called 'work'. There is a reason why they are distinct from 'home' or 'family': they aren't.

Some workplaces show distinct similarities with dysfunctional families: supervisors set the tone and have all the power in the workplace, they often are the most dysfunctional people there, they treat treat strangers better than their own employees, etc. But people should never make the mistake of thinking that a workplace or employer is somehow a 'family' in any intelligent sense of the word.

When I hear that 'family' thing, I immediately think of workplaces that have those motivational posters on their walls. Employers or their agents who actually say that they are like family there, they are the kind of people who think actual improvement of any sort can be made by putting up a poster.

Sickening.
